My Local Guide to Mariefred – A Little Town with a Big Heart
Welcome to my home town!
Some places have a way of slowing us down. They invite us to take a deeper breath, linger a little longer, and appreciate the beauty in everyday moments. For me, Mariefred is one of those places.
Nestled on the shores of Lake Mälaren, this charming little town is often known for its picturesque streets, historic buildings, and the magnificent Gripsholm Castle. But beyond its postcard-perfect appearance lies something even more special — a sense of calm, community, and timelessness that is becoming increasingly rare.
This is not a comprehensive guide to everything Mariefred has to offer. Instead, it's a collection of personal favourites — places I return to time and time again, hidden gems, beautiful views, wonderful cafés, and little moments that make me grateful to call this town home.
Whether you're visiting for a few hours, a weekend, or simply dreaming about your next getaway, I hope this guide inspires you to explore Mariefred at a slower pace and discover its unique charm for yourself.
Welcome to one of my favourite places in the world.
A little history of Mariefred
Mariefred’s origins date back to the late 14th century, when a monastery was founded in the area.
The town gets its name from “Märi(a)fred” – meaning “Mary’s peace”, a reference to the monastic presence and sense of calm associated with the place.
After the Reformation in the 16th century, the monastery was closed and the stone was later used in the construction of what is now Gripsholm Castle.
The castle, commissioned by King Gustav Vasa, became one of Sweden’s most important royal residences.
In 1605, Mariefred officially received its town privileges, making it one of Sweden’s oldest chartered towns.
Over time, Mariefred grew slowly as a small trading and craft town, shaped by its location on Lake Mälaren.
Today, it is known for its well-preserved wooden houses, historic atmosphere, and strong cultural heritage.
The town is also home to the famous narrow-gauge railway, the heritage train ÖSlJ, which still runs steam trains during the summer.
Getting Here
Mariefred is just over an hour from Stockholm – but it feels like stepping into another world.
The journey itself is part of the experience. As you leave the city behind, the landscape slowly opens up into fields, forests, and glimpses of water, until eventually you arrive in a place where everything feels a little softer, a little quieter.
It’s close enough for an easy day trip, yet far enough to feel like you’ve truly escaped. Whether you come by car, train, or the little steam train in summer, there’s a sense of anticipation that builds along the way – as if you’re heading somewhere you’re meant to slow down.
And when you finally arrive, time seems to shift. The pace changes. You notice more. You breathe differently.
You can get here by:
Train to Läggesta, then a quick bus (304 or 305) to the town center. If it’s a sunny day, it’s short 3km long walk from the station.
Boat (summer only) – yes, you can arrive like royalty by steamboat from Stockholm!
Car – take the E20 toward Strängnäs and follow signs to Mariefred. Parking is easy by the harbor.
Where to Stay
If you’re planning to spend the night (or a few) in Mariefred, here are some charming spots that feel like a home away from home:
Gripsholms Värdshus — Historic, elegant, and full of character. This classic inn offers cozy rooms and delicious meals in a beautiful setting, just steps from the water and the castle. Perfect for a relaxing weekend or special occasion.
Skomakargården — A charming boutique hotel right in the heart of Mariefred’s old town. With cozy rooms, warm hospitality, and a wonderful central location, it’s an inviting base for exploring the town’s cafés, shops, and history.
Lovely Airbnbs — For those who like a more personal touch, Mariefred has several cozy Airbnbs sprinkled around town — from charming apartments in the center to quiet lakeside cottages. A few weeks every year we rent out our own house, and we love to welcome guests from around the word, see more from our house here.
No matter your style, Mariefred offers welcoming places to rest and recharge after a day of exploring.
My Favorite Places to Shop
Mariefred’s shops are small but full of soul. These are my go-to spots for gifts, inspiration, or a little self-love:
Hembruket – Swedish-made home goods with natural materials and timeless design. Full of calm and creativity.
Mariefreds Bokhandel – A cozy bookstore run by Eva since 2004. A warm, story-filled place where you can find books, stationery, and little treasures.

Most of these are close to each other along Storgatan and Nygatan — perfect for a relaxed shopping stroll.
Fika, Food & Slow Moments
Some of my favorite places to pause, eat, and just be — because no visit to Mariefred is complete without warm drinks and delicious bites:
Två Goda Ting – Organic and homemade treats in a café and interior shop full of love and charm.
Han i Hörnet – A cozy bistro with a seasonal à la carte menu featuring dishes like hand-cut tartare and roasted pork belly — perfect for casual yet refined dining.
Alba – A stylish neighborhood bistro serving seasonal dishes inspired by Swedish, French, and German flavors — intimate and welcoming.
Rakstugan – The tiniest, coziest restaurant in town, set in a former barbershop, serving creative tapas and open-faced sandwiches with local ingredients.
Callanderska Garden Café – A hidden summer garden café full of flowers and sweet aromas.

Nearby places worth exploring
Strängnäs
Just along the water you’ll find Strängnäs — a beautiful small town with a calm harbour, colourful wooden houses and a relaxed pace. Don’t miss the impressive Strängnäs Cathedral, which rises above the town and offers both history and views over Lake Mälaren.
Taxinge Castle & Bakery
A short drive away you’ll find Taxinge Slott, often known as the “cake castle”. Set right by the water, it’s famous for its generous bakery buffet and is the perfect place for a slow afternoon fika with a view.
Södertälje & Tom Tits Experiment
For something more playful, Södertälje is home to Tom Tits Experiment — one of Sweden’s largest science centres. A fun and interactive stop, especially if you’re travelling with children, but just as interesting for curious adults.
Strängnäs harbour walk
Even outside the main sights, Strängnäs harbour is worth a visit in itself. It’s the kind of place where time stretches out — perfect for an ice cream by the water, watching boats drift in and out, and simply enjoying the calm.
Kayaking on Lake Visnaren (Åkers Styckebruk)
Just outside Åkers Styckebruk lies Lake Visnaren — a quiet, forest-framed lake that feels like a hidden escape into nature.
It’s part of a longer canoe route through the Sörmland landscape, connecting lakes and waterways into a peaceful journey through forests and open water. Whether you stay for a short paddle or explore further, it’s an incredible way to experience the area from the water.
In summer, the lake becomes a still and quiet retreat where the only sounds are paddles in the water, birds in the trees, and wind moving through the forest. A simple, beautiful way to slow down completely.
A Little Love Letter to Mariefred
Mariefred is more than just a pretty place — it’s a feeling. It’s that quiet moment when the world slows down, and you notice the soft sunlight filtering through the leaves, the gentle lapping of the lake, and the stories whispered by cobblestone streets. It’s a town that invites you to breathe a little deeper, linger a little longer, and find joy in small, unexpected moments.
For me, Mariefred is a daily reminder that beauty doesn’t have to be loud or complicated. It’s in the imperfect paint on a wooden door, the worn pages of a beloved book, the laughter shared over fika with friends. It’s in capturing those fleeting, golden-hour moments with my camera, and sharing that gentle magic with others — just like I do on my page, where every photo tells a story of calm, curiosity, and a love for the simple things.
So whether you’re here for a weekend or just passing through, I hope you find your own little moments of wonder in Mariefred. Moments that make your heart feel lighter, your pace a bit slower, and your spirit a touch brighter.
Come as you are, bring your curiosity, and let Mariefred’s soft charm wrap around you like a warm hug.
Hope to see you in Mariefred soon!
